Purified dimethyltryptamine is a white, pungent-smelling, crystalline solid. It is insoluble in water, but soluble in organic solvents and aqueous acids. DMT is a hallucinogenic chemical found in a variety of natural and synthetic compounds. Specifically, DMT can be found in the leaves, seeds, or roots of the following plant genera and species:
Acacia genus, including A. maidenii (also called maiden’s wattle) and A. phlebophylla (also called buffalo sallow wattle)
Anadenanthera genus, including A. peregrina (also called yopo), A. columbrina, A. excelsa, and A. macrocarpa
Arundo donax (giant river reed)
Banisteriopsis rusbyana, which is added to the har-maline drinks derived from other plants of the Banisteriopsis genus to make “oco-yage”
Desmanthus genus, including D. illinoensis and D. leptolobus; also called the bundle flower, Illinois bundle flower, Illinois bundle weed, prairie Mimosa, pezhe gasatho (rattle plant), atikatsatsiks (spider-bean), kitsitsaris (bad plant), and the narrow-pod bundle flower
Diploterys cabrerana (Chagro-panga)
Phalaris genus, including P. aquatica, P. arundi-nacea, P. canariensis, and P. tuberosa
Psychotria viridis, which is also added to the Ban-isteriopsis drinks
Mimosa genus, including M. hostilis and M. verrucosa; also called jurema preta (hostilis), jurema branca (verrucosa), mimosa, caatinga, white jurema, and black jurema
Virola genus, including V. theiodora, V. calophylla, V. calophylloidea, V. surinamensis, V. cuspidata, V. elongata, V. lorentensis, V. peruviana, V. rufula, and V. sebifera
In addition to plant sources of hallucinogenic chemicals, several species of toads produce venom that has psychoactive properties. Members of the genus Bufo, particularly Bufo marinus and Bufo alvarius, contain bufotenine and 5-MeO-DMT. Typically toads are either licked or milked for their venom, which is then smoked or ingested. Alternatively, their dried skin may be smoked.
