Dextromethorphan: Personal and social consequences

Currently, there is no evidence that the abuse of over-the-counter medications necessarily leads to a progression of addiction to illicit substances such as opiates, cocaine, or amphetamines. However, evidence gathered from many research studies suggests some association between the abuse of drugs and the progression of abuse to stronger and more dangerous drugs.
